India won the Field Hockey tournaments of 1928, 1932 and 1936. In fact, India went on to win the next three tournaments as well and thereby defending their title successfully five times in a row. They remained undefeated for 30 consecutive matches. Further Hockey Gold in 1964 and 1980
made up India's eight Olympic titles prior to Sydney 2000.
39 hockey players from India have been Olympic Champion prior to WW2 winning 3 Gold. Up to 1936, India competed as a colony of Great Britain.
