The first Greek to become Olympic Champion was professional fencer Leonidas Pyrgos who beat his only opponent, Frenchman M. Perronnet in the Masters Foil event.
12 Greek athletes have been Olympic Champion prior to WW2. After Tsiklitiras' victory in the Standing Long Jump of 1912, another 48 years would pass before the Greek flag would again signal an Olympic Champion from that country.
