Spain's sole Olympic Gold Medal prior to WW2 was won by the equestrian team of Garcia, Alvarez and Navarro who won the Prix des Nations on 12 August 1928, the final day of the Amsterdam Olympic Games.
It was to take 52 years before another Spanish athlete, Alejandro Abascal, would
win Olympic gold.
More recently it was discovered that Villota and Amezola won the '2-man Team with Cesta'
in the sport of Pelota Basque, a cross between tennis and handball, played in Basque, Spain
on 21 June 1900. The official report of that year states that Señor Villota was from
Madrid and Señor Amezola from Bilbao, beating a French pair. No other details are known about these two
athletes.
